MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet that is available as a browser extension as well as an app for iOS and Android devices. It allows users to access their Etherium wallet through a browser extension or mobile app, which can then be used to interact with decentralized applications.

Of course, if you’ve clicked on this article, you’re probably already aware of this. That said, it seems that many users are reporting that they’re getting an error message saying ‘MetaMask encountered and error’ when opening the browser extension.

We’ve shared some tweets from users who’ve taken to Twitter to seek some help.

It seems that the problem first popped up a few days ago and several individuals confirmed the same on the MetaMask Github community as well.

A few individuals have also shared temporary workarounds that appeared to have fixed the problem for them. Further, a MetaMask contributor has also shared a workaround for the problem that we’ve also added below.

Workarounds

I just arbitrarily solve my error issue on the BSC network. I not sure whether it was fixed from one of these two actions. You may try and hope it helps.

  1. I have change from “https://bsc-dataseed.binance.org” to “https://bsc-dataseed.binance.org/
  2. I use my mobile app trust wallet to send a tiny amount of BNB from another account to my main address in Metamask.

Suddenly no more error when selecting the BSC smart chain.

Noted that I have multiple public keys added to Metamask but only one of them had this error.

That is weird because for me it works when I’ve switched to Matic (using https://rpc-mainnet.maticvigil.com) before loggin-in but crashes with that error when i switch to ethereum main net after that

I haven’t modified the ethereum network settings (i think, but can’t check now because it crashes when i switch to it)

I get this error whenever I click on ETH within the asset list on mainnet on one of my accounts. Switching to a different network or account solves the issue. Removing all tokens other than ETH didn’t help fix.

Here’s the official workaround in video form:

An official fix for the issue is in the pipeline, however, the team has not shared any details regarding the ETA. This means it may take a while before MetaMask encountered an error message disappears.
